Why I started running - And why you should too.

One of the questions I hear most often as a running coach is, “Why do you run so much?” The answer that usually pops out is, “It keeps me sane!” While that’s true, it only scratches the surface of my reasons for running.

Running has been a constant in my life—a source of joy, resilience, and calm. So today, I’d like to share a little about how I started and why I believe running can be transformative for anyone.

How I Started

I started running during one of the most challenging periods of my life. I was in my late 20’s, a newly single mam raising two young kids, and juggling a demanding job. At times, it felt like everything around me was spinning out of control. Running became my anchor, the one thing I could manage entirely on my own terms.

It began humbly—a 400-meter path behind my house. I’d run 200 meters, then walk the rest. Slowly but surely, I built up my endurance, alternating between running and walking until I could complete a full lap. The day I ran my first mile without stopping, I felt an incredible sense of accomplishment, even if I thought I might keel over at the end!

That mile was just the beginning. With the encouragement of my sisters (I’m lucky enough to be one of 13 siblings!), I kept at it, each run building my strength and confidence.

What Running Means to Me

Empowerment and Resilience

Running taught me that I am capable of so much more than I ever believed. Crossing finish lines—whether it’s my first mile, a 10K, or a marathon—has given me an unshakable sense of empowerment. The discipline and determination I’ve developed through running have carried over into every other aspect of my life, from parenting to building my business.

A Moving Meditation

Over the years, running has become more than just physical exercise. It’s my time to disconnect from the chaos of life and tune into the present moment. Whether it’s the sound of birdsong on a trail, the rhythmic pattern of my breath, or even the patter of rain, running gives me a profound sense of peace and clarity. It’s my meditation in motion.

The Power of Positivity

Running has also taught me the incredible impact of mindset. Whether I’m tackling a tough workout or pushing through the final miles of a race, staying positive is my secret weapon. A positive attitude isn’t just helpful—it’s a game-changer. I believe we think how we speak and speak how we think, and this mental shift has helped me achieve goals I once thought impossible.

Why You Should Start

You don’t have to be an athlete or a marathoner to experience the benefits of running. Whether you’re looking for a way to manage stress, improve your health, or set personal goals, running can meet you exactly where you are. It’s not about how fast or how far you go; it’s about showing up for yourself and enjoying the journey.

Today, I’m proud to be a running coach and to share what I’ve learned with others. My philosophy is rooted in the science of running and a belief in building a sustainable, injury-free running career. I’m here to help runners of all levels build their aerobic foundation, achieve their goals, and discover the joy that running can bring.

So why run? The better question might be: Why not?
